Text 21 Mar The Beginning

So before i start, I need to mention that I am not american, so please excuse any misspellings or uncorrect use of the language or terms. I lived one year in new jersey as an AuPair, and therefore think that my english is not too bad, so this is why my whole blog is in english and not in german, my native language.

I’m taking a creative writing course and the first “homework” was to write down our favourite book and three reasons why we chose the one we chose. So naturally I picked “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac. This book lightens a fire in my heart and makes me want to leave everything behind and go find the places and adventures Kerouac writes about. It makes me want to hear that jazz, sit in smoke filled bars and just live. Well, I know that there is a reason why this book is so successful. I’m not the only one who feels that way. I think almost everyone is longing for a wild, adventurous life with no rules, no 9-5 job and no commitmens. But we can’t have that. We need to work, need to make money, need to be decent. And that’s why this book also makes me so sad. Times have changed. All the bars and places that could tell stories of how life used to be, are closing. The owners die and the new owners just want to make money and open up a hip club for young people. It’s like a Bob Dylan concert from 1964 compared to one from 2010. It makes you sad, just sad.
